The Congress of the Mexican State of Morelos is considering a reform of the Political Constitution of the State to regulate the issue of official documents of the Civil Registry in the language or mother tongue requested by the indigenous citizens, inform the journal La Unión.

Morelos is one of the 31 states that, together with Mexico City, form the 32 Federal Entities of the United Mexican States. Cuernavaca is the capital.

To date, in Morelos, procedures such as issuing official documents of the Civil Registry aren’t possible when the applicant is indigenous. For this reason, the plenary session of the Congress of the State is considering recognising the indigenous identity, which is present in communities such as Huetapan, in Tetela del Volcán, or Xoxoctla, in Puente Ixtla.

This measure will serve not only to guarantee the right to express themselves in their mother tongue, but also to preserve the languages of these indigenous communities, among which some highlight include Nahuatl, Mixtec, Zapotec and Otomi, since these are the most widely spoken languages.
