The most spoken languages in the world from a graphic perspective

In this round graphic, Alberto Lucas shows the twenty-three most spoken languages in the world.

These twenty-three languages are the mother tongue of 4.1 billion people. If we take into account the fact that there are 7.2 billion people in the world, this is a good proportion.

Each language is represented by a colour and has a different size, which depends on the number of native speakers of each country (the number appears next to the language). The colour shows how languages have taken root in each country around the world.

Spanish is the second mother tongue in the world in number of speakers after Chinse. It is mainly spoken in Mexico, United States, Colombia, Argentina and Spain (sorted by number of native speakers).

Note: this round graphic has been created by Alberto Lucas López for the Hong Kong English-language newspaper “South China Morning Post.”
