The Government of Paraguay and the linguist Nicolás Gynan have signed an agreement to document the Guana Language, in danger of disappearing, informs the journal ABC of Asunción.

The Guana language is a language from the north of Paraguay currently spoken by only four old women. The challenge of the linguist Nicolás Gynan is to study and document it to prevent its disappearance.

Gynan, together with the Language Policy Department (SPL in Spanish), will do a trilingual dictionary (Guana-Guarani-Spanish) to foster the revitalisation of this threatened language.

The dictionary will be done in the community of Río Apa, located on the north of Paraguay. The creation of this dictionary starts with a previous tasks: the characterisation of the Guana alphabet.

Once the tasks of characterisation of the alphabet and the creation of the dictionary have finished, children and teenagers belonging to this indigenous people will study in this language.

This is not the only work that the linguist and the SPL will carry out: both will train a technical team of the General Direction of Linguistics Planning to make an assessment of the use of the Guarani language at the public service.
