The aim of the UNESCO Atlas of languages in danger of disappearing is to make the people in charge of the development of policies, the speaker communities, and the public in general aware of the problem of the languages in danger of disappearing and the need of protecting the linguistic diversity of the world.
También pretende ser un instrumento para efectuar el seguimiento de las lenguas amenazadas y de las tendencias que se observan en la diversidad lingüística a nivel mundial.
The last edition of the Atlas (2010, available in English, French, and Spanish) was carried out thank to the support of the Government of Norway, explains the UNESCO in its web. There is in it a list of 2,500 languages (among of which 230 languages have been extinguished since 1950). These figures approach to the common estimation, which revolves around 3,000 endangered languages in the whole world. The Atlas registers the name and the degree of danger of disappearing of each language, as well as the country or countries where each language is spoken.
The interactive edition provides additional information about the number of speakers, policies, relevant projects, and geographic data, among other issues. The Atlas, available online, allows access to its content, as well as an updating of its data thanks to the information provided by the users.
