Two books about the Guaranies describe the experiences of these indigenous people

05/08/2015

Quereimbas y Amandiya are two works that tell stories and experiences of the Guarani people. Both try to discover the forgotten traditions of this community, explained his author David Acebey when presenting his books, said La Razón of Bolivia.

“The books have a mix of testimonies, stories, Guarani tales, and images […]. I try to show them to Guarani people because Bolivian people did not know that the Guaranies existed”, specified Acebey, who presented his works in the Journalist Association of La Paz (APLP).

Quereimbas in Guaraní, according to the author, approximately means “warrior” as a military status, and Amandiya, “wise woman” or “witch woman”. Acebey explained that this term was unknown even by Guarani communities. During a tour, he managed to interview the last Amandiya.

The author took eight years to write the first book, which was first published in 1992. As to the edition of Amandiya, he took ten years (from 2004 to 2014).

Acebey was born in 1945 and is native to the Avarenda community, of Guarani tradition. The author considered himself self-taught in literature, and assured that he rarely expressed himself in front of the audience, that is why he prefers expressing himself through his literary works. He said that from now on he will publish other “unpublished” texts.
